The Somerset Cup was set alight as Bath City knocked 4 past Wellington on a cold Wednesday night! Well not really, it was a fairly dull game although Bath did score 4 and knock out Wellington. The day started well for me, I had a lie in as I do not start sixth form until 10.40 on a Wednesday and was home by 1pm as I finish at 12.10. After picking up some lunch and packing some dinner into my bag I set off for Twerton Park to catch the coach at around 4pm. As I walked down the road I saw my friend Andy waiting for his bus home so I stopped and had a chat with him before carrying on my journey. I met my friend George who was coming with me to Wellington and we made our way from the bridge to Twerton. The bus came bang on time at 5pm and to our surprise it was a 49 seater coach for all 16 of us booked on the coach! The journey was nice with all the room on the coach but did take 2 hours, just for the Somerset Cup!

We arrived at around 7pm to a proper non league ground. For one we couldn't find how to get in, we could just find the bar which had no exit into the ground. We eventually found it and went in through an unmaned turnstyle meaning many didn't pay the large sum of £5 for a game of this type. I did though, as I wanted to get a programme from the ticket man.

I forgot my camera guys so I will use some google pics and try to describe the ground as best I can. THE PLAYING FIELDS (WELLINGTON) is a very basic non league ground that you may even see being used on a sunday morning for sunday league games. As you enter through the turnstyle you come onto the main side of the ground. This side has the small clubhouse and a rather unusual hole in the building which I think is supposed to be a place for fans to stand, but it was used as a storage area on the night. Opposite this side is a cricket wicket and has no railing so no fans were allowed to stand there making the ground a 3 sided ground. At the far end is a very oddly placed small stand that can hold about 30 people seated. This stand has a fence at the front for some reason, I doubt it is for fighting reasons. The other end of the ground is grassland and trees with a railing to lean against. All the fans were situated on the first side of the pitch as it was the only place giving a good view. The ground is shared with a cricket ground, with the pitch on the far side as well as the cricket clubhouse behind the far goal.

Here is the report of the game courtesy of Wellington AFC:

"WELLINGTON bowed out of the Somerset Premier Cup after defeat by Bath City of the Blue Square Conference South at the Playing Field last night. But Jamie Ward’s side could hold their heads high after a performance against a team four divisions above them which yielded far more positive factors than negative. Wellington got off to the worst possible start by falling behind inside the first minute as a long-range shot by tricky winger Kerry Morgan bounced past unsighted keeper Paul Gibbins. The home side then matched the visitors for the next 40 minutes with skipper Leon Taswell volleying across the face of goal and midfielder Max Westlake shooting wide from a good position. But Bath increased their lead just before the break as a cross from the right was knocked down for Brad Norris to volley home with the help of a deflection. Ward’s starting line-up included new signing Martin White, after the defender re-joined the club, and he introduced two more at the interval – central defender Ed Weeks and midfielder Joe Chamberlain – with a fourth – striker Jamie Dingle – joining the fray ten minutes later. Bath virtually wrapped up their victory on the hour when Sam Babatunde headed home a cross and they completed the scoring nine minutes from time with an exquisite chip by Morgan. Wellington did get the ball in the net in the closing minutes but a looping header by Weeks was ruled out for a push on keeper Jason Mellor."

All in all the game was very boring yet the taking in of a new ground and a new area was very nice. If you are thinking of going there for a visit then you aren't in for much of a treat because of the basic structure of the ground. There is plenty of parking spaces on site and the area around the ground is generally very nice. You should also wrap up as the ground is very open.
